Arbroath made the return trip down to Alloa looking to overhaul their rivals in the Scottish Hydro Electric league.
The first ten minutes did not bode well for the travellers when they were starved of possesion and Alloa scored two quick tries to take an early 10-0 lead. Alloa were in a confident mood but were brought back down to earth when an overly ambitious pass down their back line was spilled. Keillor snaffled the loose ball and evaded the first defender to streak all of 80 yards to give Arbroath a foothold in the game. Alloa 10 Arbroath 7
Arbroath were slowly clawing their way back into the game, Breach,Skivington and McIntyre were putting themselves about in defence and Smith, McRimmon and Hall were using slow ball to keep the momentum going. The defence was being stretched to the limit however and things began to look grim when Alloa scored another two unanswered tries to move into a comfortable 24-7 lead at half time.
Despite the ominous looking halftime score, Arbroath stil felt there was something for them in the game should they secure the first score of the half. Skipper D Cargill led by example as always and stole the ball in a ruck made a break and chipped over the onrushing defence. The fullback fumbled the ball to hand Arbroath an excellent attacking position 5 metres from the line. The scrum held strong, Breach picked from the base and drew in the defence before offloading to D Cargill who cut inside to put Arbroath back in the match. Alloa 24 - Arbroath 14
Alloa hit straight back and pinned Arbroath back in their own half. Keillor ambitiously tried to run the ball out from his own 22 but was caught and Alloa received the put in to the scrum five metres from the Arbroath line. They recycled the ball for a few phases, sucking in the defenders before scoring in the corner. Alloa 29 - Arbroath 14.
Arbroath were determined to stand up and be counted, the momentum in the match was see sawing between the teams and Arbroath now surged straight back at the opposition. Haynes hacked through a loose ball and chased it down. The Alloa fullback was swamped and Mcintosh and Skivington softened up the defence by taking pop balls and smashing into the defence at full speed. Olliver grabbed the ball and from close range was unstoppable to shorten the deficit to 29-21.
Arbroath tails were up but the momentum was halted when McIntosh took a blow and had to go off to recover. Alloa capitalised on the shortage and broke forward, a last ditch try saving tackle from Haynes and McRimmon initially stopped them but the superior numbers overwhelmed the defence and Alloa scored in the corner to make it 36-21.
McIntosh rejoined the fray and Arbroath were determind to go down fighting. Hall then had to go off with a neck injury but despite being a man short Arbroath finished the stronger. McIntyre hammered forward and the forwards inched forward,the ball was moved down the back line and G Cargill plunged over for the try which secure a losing bonus point.
